Self Care: The REAL Definition


When you think of self care you probably think of facials or getting a massage. But it’s so much more than that!

Self care is literally about taking care of yourself. It doesn’t have to be luxury treatment. It can be as simple as setting aside 15 minutes a day to sit in silence.

Self care is the key to living a balanced life! My self care has evolved a lot this year. And I expect it to evolve a lot as time goes on. It doesn’t have to be elaborate and it doesn’t have to be a daily routine. Keep it simple, take it easy on yourself, and find what brings you joy. Don’t shame yourself because your form of self care is different from someone else.

Self care is not meant to happen only after the burn out. You need to practice it regularly to help prevent the burn out! Self care can help with anxiety, can help with relationships (between others AND with yourself), and can improve your moods.

Right now for me it’s a morning workout. Whether that’s at The Works, CHS revolution, yoga in my office, or yoga on the beach. I have to be active. I give myself a minimum of 15 minutes to do my devotional, pray, write in my log book, and meditate over victory cards. I stopped wearing makeup for a while. Not to prove a point, but because my face needed to breathe, and because I realized I was becoming insecure when I wasn’t wearing it.

Self care is not meant to happen only after the burn out.

Remember! Everyone practices self care differently. But if you need a few tips/ideas here are a few simple ways you can practice self care:

  • Eat a healthy diet. It fuels your body and can change your mood!

  • Create a gratitude journal. This can be done whenever you feel like! In the morning, to get you set for the day or in the evening to help you find the joy from your day!

  • Meditate/relax/pray. What ever this form of relaxation looks like for you! Maybe you’re an active rester (I AM!!) Attend a yin yoga class!

  • Be present with your relationships. Set time with people you love & take away distractions.

  • Sleeping. It’s just that simple. Getting an adequate amount of sleep is important.

  • Dress in a way that makes you feel good.

They say there are 8 areas of self care:

  1. Physical

  2. Psychological

  3. Emotional

  4. Social

  5. Professional

  6. Spiritual

  7. Environmental

  8. Financial

Take a look at each of these areas in your life and see what is causing you stress or frustration. Can you release that stress by adjusting something that you’re choosing to do? You got it boo! Don’t over think it! :)
